Alexander von Vegesack: Thonet: Classic Furniture in Bentwood and Tubular Steel. -Hazar Publishing, 1996- First edition. 285x225mm 160 pages with index. Illustrated mainly in color. Cloth. Near fine in dustjacket a little sunned at the rear. In Austria in the 19th century, Michael Thonet pioneered a radical innovation in the construction of furniture - bending first veneer bundles and then solid wood to make bentwood chairs and other furniture items. This was a key development in furniture design, leading to the transition from handmade individual pieces to industrially manufactured products. Thonet succeeded in developing the bentwood process into the first large scale mechanized production line that could fulfil the needs of an international mass market. This was 50 years before Ford developed his production lines in America. Thonet also developed an international marketing network and thus his light and elegant bentwood furniture proceeded to capture a large slice of the European and American market in the second half of the 19th century. Today the beauty and simplicity of Thonet's bentwood designs means that many of them are still manufactured, often using much the same techniques as those orginally developed by Michael Thonet over one hundred years ago. Information on dating items is illustrated and there is a section in this book on the care of bentwood furniture, with details of some simple repair and restoration techniques. Price:
